Knysna & Partners Fights to Stay Alive
The existence of Knysna & Partners, what was previously known as Knysna Tourism, is in jeopardy. During summer, rumours that the organisation may be shut down, reincorporated into Knysna Municipality, flew around like uncomfortable flies. What carried more weight was alleged political influence, that Deputy Mayor Peter Myers was in conflict with CEO Greg Vogt, seeking to get rid of him.
Whatever the truth, it’s been kept quiet but, as always, will eventually buzz out, probably too late for the public to be able to provide input into decisions that have likely already been made. Nevertheless, the show must go on so…
…new Chairperson Elmay Bouwer made a bold presentation to Knysna Municipality’s Finance Section 80 meeting in support of the organisation’s request for funding (which is to be budgeted for at the end of June).
It’s notable that the organisation wishes another name change, this time to Brand Knysna. They also want to go back to their original meaning for existence i.e. tourism and not the broadened mandate, which arrived at great cost to the public, to represent all business in the town (that also lends some credibility to the rumours that there’s a parallel intention to revive the Knysna Business Chamber).
I consider the sincerity of the organisation to be limp whilst it commits to the mistakes of it’s predecessors e.g. secrecy, possible undue political influence, and a willingness to cover up the crimes of its predecessors. That makes Knysna & Partners seem like the same clique in different lipstick. Add a new dress and suddenly she’s a stripper with Brand Knysna as stage name. However, unless she’s confessed her sins, she’ll still be the same bitch.
I’ll address the negatives in a separate article at a later date. Until then, this recording should be listened to. It’s particularly relevant to those whose livelihoods rely on tourism. And it is news to all who live here. Some of what Knysna & Partners intends sounds good, even very good, making me wish i could hug the words alone…
