Tonight, New Year’s Eve, will find Knysna Municipality placing a roadblock at the entrance to the affluent suburb of Leisure Isle in order to search for, and confiscate, alcohol. No matter the reasoning, this will only inflame recent racial tension, especially considering that there was alcohol at Carols by Candlelight, a mostly white attended event.
We have to handle things better than this otherwise they will explode at some stage and the situation will become worse than before.
“LIRA (Leisure Isle Ratepayers’ Association) wishes to notify residents, your visitors and guests of the following security advice just received from Allsound Security.
At a meeting this morning with Knysna Municipality Law Enforcement and SAPS, it has reportedly been agreed that there will be a police roadblock at the island entrance i.e. causeway guard hut, at the following times:
- Wednesday 31 Dec from 19h00 to 1 Jan 01h00
- Thursday 1 Jan from 04h00 to 16h00
ALL vehicles will be stopped and ALL alcohol confiscated regardless.
We advise Leisure Isle residents/visitors not to come onto the Island at these times with alcoholic beverages in their vehicles.
Allsound will reportedly be handing out ‘flyers’ at the entrance explaining the situation.
Happy New Year to all our members and visitors…. “
