Conservation Global is hosting Elisabeth ‘Elly’ Leaning, a student from the countryside outside Boston USA. Elly is researching food security and is interested in places in Knysna where people are growing food for themselves.

Conservation Global asked me if i knew of any such people or organisations.

I took them to the grounds of the Knysna chapter of Epilepsy South Africa first. Everybody we met was so friendly! And the views of Knysna were gorgeous and contrasting, from White Location and the prison to the whole of central Knysna and the Heads. Elly will meet the director next week.

We popped over to Judah Square, the Rastafari community in the suburb of Khayalethu. Unfortunately, Sista Kerri, who was supposed to meet us, had her car break down so we never saw the food projects there but Elly was fascinated by the people she met and the art on the walls beside the road. The kids there, as always, are fabulous.

On the spur of the moment, on the way back, we stopped at Noetzie where a dead whale that had washed up was offering a massive feast for the seagulls. 100 metres away from the carcass was what appears to be a skull bone.

To end off an educational and fun trip, we stopped at Oldes Pub & Grill for a locally brewed Mitchell’s Beer which was a soothing relief after a hot day.
