ANC & DA Form Coalition in Kannaland
The Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC) have formed a coalition in Kannaland, a municipality well known for its cheese and wine…
The political chaos in Eden District may be more interesting than what’s happening in any other district in South Africa. The area includes Knysna, Bitou, Mosselbay, Oudtshoorn, Hessequa and Kannaland.
It’s unlike the rest of the Western Cape where the DA has more power than is comfortable for democracy. I say “uncomfortable” because power breeds arrogance and corruption. The DA has followed the ANC down that dirty road, the main difference being the gross failure by major media to report on it.
KANNALAND, WAAR ONS KAN
Eve and her desire for good teeth angered god by sharing an apple from the forbidden tree with Adam. The Klein Karoo municipality of Kannaland (with Ladismith as its headquarters) is bound to anger someone whilst political apples are being shared between the DA and ANC. You’ll have to decide which is Adam, which is Eve…
The election was won by ICOSA but they’ve been booted from the garden by a deal that finds the DA taking the Speaker position whilst the ANC gets Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts. I’m assuming that the DA will get a seat on the Mayoral Committee (MAYCO) too.
The situation seems absurd considering that the parties, nationwide, ran an election campaign on hating one another. But it may appear to be business as normal to locals. In 2006, the DA was in coalition with the ANC for 6 months. That collapsed when the DA formed a coalition with ICOSA. That fared little better collapsing 13 months later. There was more drama during the infamous floor crossing period.
In 2011, ICOSA took Mayorship after forming a coalition with the ANC. That situation has now swung around, ICOSA going from winner to loser in a back garden deal.
Jaco Londt, the DA’s small boy in big pants, again finds his pants slipping off. He reckons that he’s surprised and has strangely insisted that the deal struck isn’t a coalition and isn’t sanctioned by Cape Town.
“Neither the Regional, Provincial, nor the Federal structures of the DA approved any coalition. The local councillors worked together in keeping Jeffrey Donson, a convicted child rapist out of power, said Londt to the George Herald.
His position is hypocritical. His words can only be considered as support for the move that the local DA made i.e. “We’ll deny responsibility but Cape Town happy to benefit from the deal.”
