Zuma’s hands on power are slipping. He’s becoming desperate.
Riot police storming into South Africa’s parliament to chuck out an opposition MP was as illegal as it gets. Like the Marikana Massacre, it’s another nail in the fantasy that South Africa is a democracy. Zuma isn’t bothering to hide that he’s a budding dictator and doesn’t believe in the constitution and equal rights.
Where to from here?
In the long term, NUMSA will start their socialist political party and the ANC will lose more votes whilst South Africa, through more divided power, will get closer to real democracy (not that there’s such a thing in our modern world but i’ll accept getting a little bit closer). Division may help the DA pick up Gauteng and PE.
But right now needs to be our biggest worry!
Will Zuma become more extreme or will his enemies finally have enough ammunition to replace him and the tribe he has surrounded himself with (no benefit to us if if he’s only replaced by one of his cronies)?
The ANC is cracking – there will be internal opposition in the party who will want him out so as to save the ANC. Practically, ironically, we need good ANC members to oust Zuma so as to help all of us now.
Thereafter, we can’t rely on just punishment but we should at least remember the immortal words of Zuma when he appeared in Zapiro: “If elected, I promise to improve prison conditions… especially if convicted.”
