Animal Circuses Poll Result
It’s only being a day and a half since I asked you whether Should Circuses Using Animals Be Boycotted? but since a whopping 649 of you have already voted (as of 6am on 13 Jan 2014), I thought I’d share the result whilst it’s more local (as my blog may appear elsewhere on the net later today – although welcomed, if outside animal rights find it, their voting would likely change the outcome and cloud what locals really think).
If your participation was as enthusiastic on every issue I presented on this blog, we would likely alter the face of our town BUT, on this particular topic, it’s unfortunately grey.
I started my blog, ‘Yay, the Mclaren Circus is in Town’, by saying that it’s divided our town opinion and the poll result clearly shows that with 47% wanting animal circuses banned and 51% saying the topic has been blown out of proportion (2% were undecided).
My blog has drawn criticism from some but it also proved the point that the media is not accurately reflecting the view of all people in Knysna and that it’s far too easy to be sensationalist on emotional topics such as this.
That does not mean that I don’t care. In fact, I care a lot. I’m against animals in cages but sometimes I will make an effort to show both sides, rather than substantiate my opinion, in order to make you think. It may not change your opinion on a topic such as this but it may on another. Or learning a new fact could be used to change your mind or bolster your argument.
Knysna has to keep questioning until it has mass-shared opinion that can be committed into actions that change our town for the better.
Thank you for your public participation!
If a council is thinking about banning a circus the only way it should take it to the people at the next council elections to ban by on line voting if un fair how many are not on line who love the circus
People, even majorities, are often too scared to voice their opinion publicly lest very vocal activists condemn them. Media presentations are bias. Although i’m against animals in cages, i wanted to ensure both sides were thought of and the result was astounding. And that i’ve received hate mail from circus lovers and animal rights activists means i achieved my goal.
