Then & Now: The Imperial Hotel 1916

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st Jul 2011 by Public Contributor1st Jul 2011

A thatch roofed wooden building owned by William Gunn McPherson once stood on the site, which was bought by Henry Morgan in 1890 and became known as the West End Hotel. The present building, designed by Sydney Grosvenor of Great Brak River and built by Arthur George Watton, was completed in 1916, a year after the West End Hotel was demolished.

260km Mountain Bike Race

Mike Hampton Posted on 27th Jun 2011 by mikehampton27th Jun 2011

So you’ve beaten the 2Cs and you’ve overcome the treks; perhaps you’ve even tackled the Epic … Is that it? Not a chance! A sweet ride still awaits. The Honey Trail offers you and a team mate the opportunity to cycle the mountain trails of the Garden Route from Mossel Bay to Plett in Spring. When? From 9-11 September this year. The environment is spectacular and while The Honey Trail route is not all downhill, it can easily be ridden by any ‘weekend-warrior’. Maximum riding time per day is estimated … Read the full article…

Knysna Loerie Bird in Flight

Mike Hampton Posted on 17th Jun 2011 by mikehampton9th Nov 2020

I based the colouring of the Love Knysna website on the Knysna Loerie Bird (or Tauraco as it is also called); green, red, white and black. Sometimes shades make for yellows, blues and purples. It’s the perfect bird for the area because its appearance identifies with the landscape too. It is an evergreen Garden Route with yellow morning sunrises and red sunsets in summer, blue rivers and estuary, and an island bedecked with white houses. Although considered to be an emblem of our town, the Loerie Bird is almost mythical … Read the full article…

Interview with Colette Murphy

Peter Myers Knysna DA Fedex battle

Much of my early life in Knysna was spent at Chaplin’s drinking coffee. I met a bunch of interesting people there. Colette Murphy was one of them. She’s intelligent, warm and soul-searching. She’s a businesswoman, wife and mom. Many of you will know her from her weekly trekking through Knysna in search of interviews with regular folk whom she’d then feature in Motion Mag of which she was the owner. Recently, she sold it. When i told her that i was starting Love Knysna, she was quick to volunteer a … Read the full article…

2011 Hansa Waterfront Rush

Mike Hampton Posted on 16th Jun 2011 by mikehampton16th Jun 2011

After a two year absence from the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival – Magnetic South is over the moon to announce that it has secured the necessary sponsorship to once again organize the 2011 Waterfront Rush with HANSA being the title sponsor. Historically this event has had an enormously positive impact on the Festival. It is the ONE and ONLY event that has been able to attract willing participants a.k.a. adrenaline junkies that bring with them a huge spectator base who have been enraptured by every muscle twitching move … Read the full article…

The Biggest Microbrewery in South Africa

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Jun 2011 by mikehampton15th Jun 2011

Beer enthusiasts will be impressed to know that Knysna’s Mitchell’s Brewery is the biggest micro-brewery in South Africa. If you’re a local and haven’t gone on a tour before, you should…and take a designated driver:) And send every tourist there too. In town, locals certainly know Forester’s Draught and Bosun’s Bitter but Mitchell’s also has the cool sounding labels of Raven Stout and Ninety Shilling Ale. These preservative free, unpasteurized, live ales, are produced with the finest, available ingredients, utilizing British mashing and German lagering processes. The popularity of Mitchell’s … Read the full article…
