The Communications & Customer Relations (CCR) section in the Knysna Municipality isn’t worth the one and a half million rand it cost last year because there’s little honest communication and customer service. It isn’t worth the rumoured R80 000p/m that Chris Bezuidenhout, the manager, and his assistant take home every month!
The initial problem is that the vast majority of Knysna’s citizens don’t even know that Lauren Waring, the Municipal Manager, set up a Communications & Customer Relations (CCR) section.
It has been said that Bezuidenhout’s position is illegal, him strangely having no degree yet beating out stronger candidates, being promoted from the Mayor’s PA. However, he has proven to be imminently qualified in blocking the public from truth. The, on average, 5 press releases a month often result in more questions than answers. Lauren Waring is the dictator, allegedly not even allowing Bezuidenhout to control the Municipality’s Twitter account. Regards this writer, Bezuidenhout has refused to communicate. Protecting staff who don’t do their job by not doing the job you were hired to do is disgraceful. Bezuidenhout, like so many in the Municipality, doesn’t seem to accept that his job is to serve the public.
CCR is a monumental failure because it’s more a propaganda/public relations tool for Lauren Waring and the DA who ‘lead’ our town than a practical, interactive service. It’s an insult to the DA’s election promises of open doors and transparency. Lack of communication is at the heart of many problems in Knysna e.g. the N2 riots.
What we’ve got here is an intentional failure to communicate. Information is power so our ‘leaders’ have chosen to make us powerless.
