Concordia Learner Wins Provincial Speech Contest
Concordia High School learner, Kudzai Sibanda, has won the provincial YCA contest held in Paarl, on 17 August 2013. YCA – Young Communicators (Ambassadors) Award, sponsored by Anglo American and the Sowetan newspaper, is the most prestigious speech contest for English second language speakers in the country.
As the winner of the Eden and Central Karoo Education district competition, Kudzai competed against 13 district winners in the province. He triumphantly returned as the provincial winner of the YCA speech contest.
Under the tutelage of his teacher, Ms. Verhaelst, Kudzai – a Zimbabwean national – was able to enthrall judges and audience alike with his speech entitled, “I am not a threat”, which focused on his experiences as a foreign refugee.
It would be great if you could post a recording of the speech, or transliteration. Perhaps the local press could pay him to publish it?
Fantastic thought even if i say so myself:) I asked the school earlier this morning but unfortunately The Sowetan owns the rights. A teacher has said that she will try get it to me after the finals. I’m particularly interested because i want to bring more information and understanding to light regards Malawians, Rastafari, Chinese and Zimbabweans living in Knysna.
Well done, Kudzai! Lead the way by inspiring the next class of learners.
