I’ve been on the verge of quitting my protest for a better Knysna. Admittedly it wasn’t the first time but i literally couldn’t figure out how to survive and was getting too quick to say “yes” to the offer of beer so as to escape and would find that yearning continuing into movies past midnight. Reality had exhausted me. I still blogged a lot last month but, for the most part, i had to force myself to do so, motivating myself with guilt rather than reasoning. I wasn’t a happy chappy.
Then it was announced that Eleonor Bouw (Knysna’s Mayor 2007-2011) had crossed from the ANC to the DA. I liked Eleonor but was disappointed that she wasn’t running as an independent as she said she was likely to do in the 2016 municipal elections. That, alone, wasn’t the end of the world as i understand that it is far easier to run within, and from, an established network that has money… but how it was done, with unresolved questions from her past adding weight, made me compose, ‘Shock as Knysna’s Ex-ANC Mayor Turns DA Blue’.
I ended that blog with: “On the surface, i like Eleonor Bouw. I will give her a chance. She’s smart. Knysna can definitely use smart leaders. But Eleonor needs to prove that what just happened wasn’t her and other politicians outsmarting Knysna… again.”
In response to a comment, i also said, “No matter how critical i am, i am also hoping that she is part of much-needed change. It will come down to whether she will choose to do the right thing or become another servant to Cape Town and a pay cheque.”
Eleonor has unfortunately chosen the possibility of a pay cheque over being straight-forward. A step in the wrong direction is not a good first step. She has gone from talking to me to saying that she will not meet me. It seems small but it’s in fact a BIG THING because it’s not just about me – that has been the Knysna DA’s policy: FAILURE TO BE TRANSPARENT ON IMPORTANT ISSUES even though that was exactly their election promise. And the utterly shameful Knysna-Plett article, which i will soon share, was sour cream atop that.
THE TRUTH IS NOT
WHAT THOSE IN POWER WANT YOU TO KNOW.
The truth should include real answers to serious questions.
The truth should be the whole damn situation that affects our lives.
This got me thinking about the never-ending parade of liars i’ve encountered in Knysna politics. I’m not as worried about those that were blatantly shifty. The worst are those who pretended to be friends but turned out to be enemies. Those are the most dangerous sort because people are most likely to believe them.
Those people would include beloved pillars of our community such as Peter Myers (Chief of the DA Constituency), Magda Moos (DA Constituency) and Eleonor Bouw. Despite betraying who they represented themselves to be, i’m still so gullible that i don’t want to believe that this is who they really are. I don’t want to have to face off against these people that i somehow still like more than not. So i gave them a chance by sending them emails, wording them strongly so that i was clear… and also so that i would have less chance of backing down.
Update: Magda and Eleonor haven’t responded. Peter has. I originally said in this post that i would share those letters but i hesitate (and may even reconsider) depending on Peter’s further responses. I will, however, still show you how the Knysna-Plett Herald failed journalism.
