Granny Got Hurt

When you were hurt,
I didn’t recognise you
because you smile was hiding
and your hospital hair was grey

When you were hurt,
I flashed into our past,
sun-shiny moments of beaches and pie
that only now burn in my heart

When you were hurt,
I realised that I’d been uncaring,
too drowned in my childhood self
to see your adult pain

When you were hurt,
I realised that I’d failed you…
and wondered if you knew that
but were too kind to tell me?

Then you were dead.
