Holiday traffic controllers are a form of entertainment indigenous to Knysna:)

Annually, dozens of young newcomers are trained as traffic controllers on busy street corners such as Grey & Rawson and Grey & Nelson. The best seats in town are at Oldes Pub & Grill where you can sit on outside benches decked with beer whilst laughing and praying that cars don’t crash. If i remembered his face correctly, Smiley a.k.a. Ernest Nqoko, Knysna’s most famous ‘traffic director’, was one of the trainers last week.

Seriously, they provide a much needed service for a Knysna that goes from sleepy to crazy almost overnight. Such is life in a tourist-based economy. As importantly, if rumours are true, the R25/h rate adds up to R800 000 which puts much needed money straight into the pockets of the public (which is where it’s needed most).
