The Knysna Municipality officially opened the Hornlee taxi rank on Wednesday 18 November 2015. Situated at the western end of the Hornlee Sport Field, Vigilance Drive, the rank can accommodate up to 40 taxis.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Knysna Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans said, “I am delighted with the partnership and good relationships between the municipality, Taxi Association and the community. In the past we have had various challenges regarding the opening of this facility. As you are well aware the taxi rank was completed in 2012. I am glad that we have come to a consensus with the affected stakeholders and hope that we can maintain our current relations moving forward.”

“The cost of the taxi rank project has amounted to R9.2 million, funded from the Neighbourhood Development Project Grant. The site has been developed to its full potential, a traffic circle has been constructed at the rank’s exit into Vigilance Drive to allow for smooth traffic flow. Construction work done for the facility include, office space for the Taxi Associations, ablution facilities, seating for waiting commuters, paving, shaded parking bays and a retainer wall.”

Currently taxis are making use a few parking spaces at the Lamco Service Station and land owned by Council. Ms Wolmarans continued, “The taxi rank will definitely improve the situation in Hornlee it will help relieve traffic congestion, and make the commuters feel safer, for not having to queue in the street.”

“Council has experienced problems relating to vandalism of this facility and we have done what we can from our side in terms of securing the place. We also rely on you as the community to work with us in ensuring the upkeep of these facilities, and to protect it from possible vandalism or other more serious crimes. Please assist me in discouraging vandalism and feel free to report any suspected crime on, or against, these premises. By taking pride in, and looking after this taxi rank, we can look forward to using it for many years to come”, she concluded.
