HOW TO GET HELP – KNYSNA FIRE UPDATE
Disorganisation and poor communication was, initially, a massive problem but i’m very pleased to state that the Gift of the Givers Foundation is now working in conjunction with the Knysna Municipality.
Donation details here.
A home base has been established in the parking lot of the Checker’s centre. If you are fundraising for another organisation, please consider working with them, delivering your donations to the back side of the Checkers (where trucks park). Individuals can do so too.
DO NOT GO THERE FOR HELP FOR YOURSELF
You’ll receive nothing. They are working with distribution centres. The focus now is on water. If you need water, you can collect from the Methodist Church in Knysna Central. Those in White Location and Greenfields can go to the Chris Nissen School. Sedgefield Fire Station requests that you bring your own containers.
Some shopping centres have run out of bottled water but Superspar assures me that a lot is on the way. Rototank also dropping off 40 x 2500L tanks.
The water supply has run out in some areas. Knysna Central currently without water. Public toilets are closed. Bars are open 🙂
Food likely to be distributed tomorrow.
If you are working for a company that’s raised a lot of donations, look for Emily (Gift of the Givers) or Meloney (Knysna Municipality) on the second floor of the Checker’s parking lot in central town.
MANY HELPING US
Lots of help on the way – THANK YOU. I met someone’s mom whose church in PE is sending a truck. Game has got several big boys on the way. FNB and Nedbank apparently donating millions. Let’s count positives more than losses cause things ahead are more important than what’s lost behind.
The following halls are open to individuals and families who have lost their homes in the fires.
Ward 2- Sedgefield Town Hall
Ward 4 – Chris Nissen Primary
Ward 5 – Brenton Hall
Ward 7 – Khayalethu Hall
Ward 9 – Vineyard Church
Ward 10 – Mehtodist Church
Still lot of smoke and ash in air most of the day but the good news is hat the fires are mostly under control. There have been sporadic outbreaks in places near Simola, Green Pastures, White Location, Hunter’s Home and behind Knysna Hospital. The worry is that strong winds are supposed to be arriving tomorrow.
I have my own challenges so unfortunately cannot give you regular updates. Your motto must be, “HELP OTHERS WHEN YOU CAN.”
Love Knysna, Save Knysna!
PS: For those of you who know me well, i could do with some assistance too, from clothes to food next week. I’ll be close to town until Wednesday. Right now, i need airtime – 0836730909. My hands are full. Please don’t call unless emergency. Rather email me and let me get to it when best for me – email@example.com. Ta – Mike.
NB: Any concrete news (not rumours), please post below this update on Facebook.
