Interview: Knysna Ward 4's Velile Waxa
Velile Waxa has left the ANC to become an Independent. He’s contesting Ward 4 (White Location) in Knysna. His participation in the elections must concern the ANC and the KUC (Knysna Unity Congress) asĀ he’s well known and, apparently, well liked.
Waxa was previously a large figure in the Knysna ANC. In fact, he led their campaign for the 2011 elections. He was, suddenly, without reasoning, replaced by Stephen de Vries (who went on to lead the party as main opposition the past 4 years).
The ANC call it “redeployment” but it’s often an abuse of power. It’s damaging the party’s branch structures nationally.
Waxa was also in the SACP, a teacher, a long-term employee of the Knysna Municipality (in the housing department) and a SAMWU steward. Depending on your viewpoint, Waxa was famous or infamous for his role in the strikes against Pezula when they were laying staff off.
Here he discusses ANC power struggles, his dealings with other parties and the needs of his community. Most importantly, he believes that education is the only path to a future for the youth.
The election race for Knysna is incredibly tight. No one knows who will win. For anyone keeping tabs on what’s happening, this 15-minute interview with Velile Waxa will offer more insight.
