Knysna DA Deputy Mayor Esme Edge just had me served with her court fees. Guess how much? Bet you guessed too low!
The case was less than a day in High Court but they’ve tallied up an impressive amount of pre-fees. In a previous blog, I stated that I expected that a huge cost would be thrown at me. This has now become more than true.
Whether it is fair or not, I will leave it up to you to have your own opinion. Most of you will probably be too scared to express it on my Facebook but in case you aren’t, please don’t be defamatory in case they somehow use that to say it was me being defamatory by association (i have to plan for what I consider ridiculous). Keep in mind that freedom of speech is an odd monster when they can put me in jail for 60 days if they can prove I’ve been defamatory.
And, of course, it will be up to our not-so-fantastic-for-me courts to decide. Consequently, until I can find legal advice, I will not make an argument for what fees I consider stupid or not. I will simply state a few facts.
- An interesting fact is that the local law firm, Carl Jeppe Attorneys, charged far more than the advocates who appeared in High Court. You’ll know the name Carl Jeppe, of course. He and his colleague, Julie Seton, have been involved, in some way, in most of the court cases against me.
- Carl Jeppe Attorneys’ bill is R192 823. Of that, R89 305 was to read my blogs (described as “attending to downloading, perusal and consideration of blogs 1685 pages”).
- The High Court advocates they hired, Herold Gie Inc., charged R76 400.76.
- In TOTAL: R269 223.
The Bigger Picture:
The irony is that I stood alone in the High Court because I could not afford representation. If I could have, it would have probably cost me R20 000 to 30 000, somehow a lot less than the bill I’ve received.
Thankfully, I paid my rent in advance (and will always pay rent in advance whenever I have cash – I have never not paid rent in my 75 months in Knysna). Right now, however, I have R234 left to my name. Honestly, I’ll probably drink some beer with that whilst I contemplate this. Honesty always the best policy so I tell you that first before I ask:
Will you help? Those of you who believe in the battle I’m fighting. Many cases still to come. I’m not giving up.
Lawyers are too scared to represent me (or they won’t jeopardise money they’re earning money from local government) but some are prepared to give paralegal advice. I’d still have to prepare my cases but advice as to structure and court procedure would help (although a fair trial is supposed to be Constitutionally paramount, several times I’ve experienced technicalities becoming the overriding decision maker against me).
Depending on the lawyer, it would cost R850 to R1200 per hour. If anyone can contribute, it would be appreciated. I will try to get a loan as well. If I could just get 3 hours per case, it may stand me better for the cases themselves or, at least, the foundation towards an appeal.

I expect little to no justice in our courts. I have to be prepared to take one or some of these to Constitutional Court. That’s not good enough, alone, of course. It’s the ultimate irony that I can be sued for my allegations but that no one will investigate the allegations themselves – that’s life in the Western Cape. I need the national government to step in and investigate my allegations.
