Knysna 2016 Election Results Update: Aug 4
The DA has won Knysna, taking 6 of the 11 wards. However, they will need to gain 5 PR seats to control the Council outright.
COPE may have fallen apart elsewhere in the country but grew in Knysna. Not only have they won Ward 6 but stand a chance at a PR seat too. Elrick van Aswegen, the leader of the party, must be complimented (but he was quick to pass on the credit to his supporters).
As big an impact is Velile Waxa, an independent, defeating the ANC in Ward 6, the nearest poor area to Knysna Central. Like Van Aswegen, Waxa is an ex-teacher. Maybe they’ll be teaching the Council a lesson 🙂
The ACDP was expected to grow, possibly winning a PR seat, but the controversies of the past week (the ISDF, bigotry, outlandish political statements) seems to have sucked them into the mud.
Newcomers, the Ubuntu Party, aren’t doing well. It’s probable that their promise of “free electricity” wasn’t believed.
Update: Knysna is a hung Council. View the election results here.
