Knysna's Prepaid Electricity Meter Scam
It has come to the municipality’s attention that there are people in Knysna approaching homeowners in the CBD saying that they have a contract with Eskom to install pre-payment meters for R350.00. They complete application forms, take ID numbers and take a picture of the homeowner. Once the homeowner makes the R350.00 payment, they say that they will bring the receipt when they install the meter.
Needless to say these people never return to the homeowner.
Please note the Knysna Municipality has commenced with a pre-payment meter conversion program however be aware of the following:
- The pre-payment meter installation is free of charge.
- The contractors used to install the meters all have identification tags.
- The pre-payment meter is installed in the municipal kiosk and not inside the house and the customer is handed a keypad only which is used for communication with the meter inside the locked kiosk.
- Eskom is not permitted to install their pre-payment meters in Knysna’s Municipal District.
Please be on the look-out for these people and report them to the police if they should approach you.
