At the Knysna Tourism AGM last night, sparks flew and resulted in Johan van Schalkwyk, the Marketing Manager, quitting under a cloud. His resignation letter states that he and the staff have “lost all confidence in the management and board of the organisation.”
On this blog, i have clearly expressed that i lost my faith in the likes of CEO Greg Vogt and Tourism’s directors (current and past) such as Municipal Manager Lauren Waring, Mayor Georlene Wolmarans and Deputy Mayor Esme Edge a long time. Until they stop the cover-up and punish those responsible for the irresponsible use of taxpayers’ money and the resulting bankruptcy there will be no faith by the public in the organisation.
Later today, i will get the full story of what led to the personality and accommodation money issue explosion that resulted in Johan van Schalkwyk resigning. For now, here’s his letter:
“Based on various discussions over the last two days and the humiliation endured at tonight’s AGM by the exposé of confidential information at Knysna Tourism Board level, I believe my reputation and respect within the Knysna community was compromised and therefore I tender my immediate resignation as Marketing Manager of the organisation.
My reputation as a competent marketing officer in my professional career with a respected education, experience and future career path was, this evening brought down by allegations, that was not backed by a CEO of the organization in a manner that I, as marketing manager, can have total trust in.
“I thank the organisation for the opportunities afforded me and state that the achievements gained since October 2013 was by a magnificent team – whom I believe tonight, have lost all confidence in the management and board of the organisation. A leak of confidential info of the nature discussed in a public forum this evening, damaging reputations with major repercussions to their future career options, is humiliating and not professional.”

Full disclosure: Tourism doesn’t tolerate critics so i wasn’t invited to last nights meeting. I swiped this letter from the Knysna-Plett Herald’s website.
