I had one of my readers contact me to say how weird she felt bumping into Kyle Maspero on Leisure Isle whilst “Racy” was in jail and “Rosie” was dead. Coincidentally, some mates and I had also bumped into him a week before that, also on Leisure Isle, at Green Hole – he and his foster father, Martin Hatchuel, were taking their dogs for a walk.
Kyle Maspero and his girlfriend, Phoenix Theron, were accused of killing her mother, Rosemary Theron, in Cape Town in 2013. Phoenix has since confessed and been sentenced to jail. Kyle has been on bail since March 2014. All were originally from Knysna.
The fact is that all must be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Additionally, Maspero’s lawyer claimed his client suffered from “protracted and heavy use of narcotics”. If this is true, and in light of my admitted desire for a spotlight to be shone on Knysna tik abuse, his drug of choice, I have to be understanding of the judge’s decision that he be sent for 30 days for psychological evaluation at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. The problem was that no bed was available so his bail in Knysna was extended.
On Wednesday this past week, a month later, Kyle Maspero appeared in court in Cape Town again. As there was still no bed available, his bail was again extended. Comments, online, have not been friendly.
