The Biggest Microbrewery in South Africa
Beer enthusiasts will be impressed to know that Knysna’s Mitchell’s Brewery is the biggest micro-brewery in South Africa. If you’re a local and haven’t gone on a tour before, you should…and take a designated driver:) And send every tourist there too.
In town, locals certainly know Forester’s Draught and Bosun’s Bitter but Mitchell’s also has the cool sounding labels of Raven Stout and Ninety Shilling Ale. These preservative free, unpasteurized, live ales, are produced with the finest, available ingredients, utilizing British mashing and German lagering processes.
The popularity of Mitchell’s beers lead to a second branch opening on the classy V & A Waterfront in Cape Town. In the North-West and Gauteng Provinces, the Roach family has acquired the rights to distribute these great beers.
Lex Mitchell opened Mitchell’s Brewery in 1983. The Cape Town branch opened in 1989. There have been a few changes of hands over the decades.
Making beer is fun and Mitchell’s Brewery is an integral part of the Knysna culture so tours are available to the public. You can witness the process and the equipment utilized. Experience high quality malt, fermentable sugars, wort., hops and yeast. You’ll know what they are by the time you’re taking a rest with a nice, cold beer.
