6 of the websites i offer have been free services to Knysna. Same for the very successful FB page. Working without a salary is incredibly challenging.
Investigating stories is the toughest e.g. phone calls, internet and lots of time. The elephant abuse story, alone, took up most of the past week. And i’ve still to return to so many topics and start others.
I keep my expenses low (my rent is only a R1000) but i’m simply not keeping my head above water.
I won’t show favouritism on topics towards donators. They simply have to believe, overall, that my efforts to dig for the truth has value to Knysna. If it wasn’t for me, the public would have no idea of the shenanigans that our municipality has gotten up to because the newspapers, hanging onto their advertising revenues, have been too scared to print them. When last did you see an investigate report or criticism anywhere but on Knysna Keep?
R50 airtime helps. And if there’s anyone out there with bigger money, and who wants to support a better Knysna, imagine a small team dedicated to addressing Knysna’s problems. The Ward Committees are suppose to do that but they’re unfortunately hooked into the corrupt system that is our local government. The ANC and the DA need watchdogs. People who do wrong and who aren’t kept in check simply do more wrong. That is the nature of the beast that is most often Mankind. Power and big salaries corrupt.
