Public Protector Investigating Knysna Corruption

Allegations of Knysna government corruption and maladministration will be investigated by Advocate Gideon Landman of the Eden District Office of the Public Protector.

For 6 years, a long-running battle has ensued between the Democratic Alliance (DA) and myself, Mike Hampton, an activist and citizen journalist through online platforms, Love Knysna and Knysna Keep.

9 complaints to the Public Protector and 1 to the National Council of Provinces allege tender irregularities, illegal appointments of staff to senior positions, funds meant for empowerment spent on consultants, the loss of millions in public funds and the abuse of the courts.

THE DARK SIDE

The darkest aspect is the cover-up. The DA and the Knysna Municipality blocked communication and are involved in a propaganda campaign that has labelled me as a danger to children and a destroyer of the town’s economy. DA associated doctors even labelled me publicly as a psychopath. Local businesses were openly threatened if they associated with me. The goal was to discredit and destroy me whilst giving a get-out-of-jail-free card to councillors and public servants who are damaging our town.

It’s the dark side of the DA that national media have so far refused to investigate. Locally, the Knysna-Plett Herald newspaper actively worked with them against me. Whilst fingers were pointed at Jacob Zuma, the DA’s power in the Western Cape grew into abuse and totalitarianism that favours the few over the many. Backroom deals have perverted democracy, favouring the powerful over the public.

I point my own fingers, especially at the DA’s hierarchy, accusing DA Federal Executive Chairperson James Selfe, DA Leader Mmusi Maimane and the rest of the National Assembly who’s turned their backs on my appeals for help and the allegation that Premier Helen Zille, MEC Anton Bredell, MEC Alan Winde and ex-East Region Manager Jaco Londt played a big part in this messy, misnamed democracy.

As an example, Zille was made aware in person, in print and via email of the crimes of two DA candidates who were then allowed to take office. It’s possible that becoming councillor was Dr Martin Young’s reward for his actions against me. His wrongdoings is a long list but consider these threats:

“The moment it is out there that [their business] supports you and enables you, there is bound to be a consequence to their business… You seem not to realize that you are in no position to negotiate. I’m surprised you even tried. We hold all the cards, and have all the power to make your life really and truly miserable… jail is more than likely your next Knysna destination.”

THE DA WILL KEEP HURTING ME

I don’t feel relief that the Public Protector is involved. They need to investigate the role of one of their own who gave the DA a free ride. The DA’s power is enormous. They’re backed by foreign sponsors. Like other parties, they seek control of our rich country. They’ll do anything to protect their false marketing image. I’m just a small citizen. They’ll keep hurting me so as to keep pretending they’re the good guys.

I’m taken endlessly in court. I have to be loud for my own protection and survive whatever brick they throw at me next.

Locally, the DA isn’t alone in their misdeeds. There’s no opposition here, No ANC, ACDP, KUC or COPE. There’s just factions, power groups across the political lines, failing to serve the public.
