There is going to be a reshuffling of the Mayoral Committee (or MAYCO for short). They’re the Councillors with the real power. Each heads up a portfolio (Finance, Community Services etc.) and reports directly to Mayor Georlene Wolmarans. All decisions made by all Section80 Committee, the beginning point for processes, has to pass through the MAYCO before final approval at an Ordinary or Special Council meeting.
There are 19 Ward and PR Councillors. The grand prize for them would be to get onto the MAYCO where the pay packet will change their lives – literally double.
Who will be kicked out or gracefully step down? I’ve expected a change and dropped hints the past two months. Let’s keep guessing. The reason why i expected the change is because the political parties have been gearing up towards the next local elections. Our Council is in disarray, clearly evident by decisions made and decisions withdrawn. They’re fighting one another to not only keep their jobs but to have power over each other before they have power over us.
Mayor Wolmarans may be fighting hardest of all. She’s unpopular. When she gets her way, it’s because her personality is stronger than that of two DA councillors who, after 4 years, remain uneducated as to some of the bigger issues happening in our town. They seem like nice people so i withhold their names but their complacency and poor attempt to educate themselves to matters such as the ISDF, is damaging our town. They need to get out of their depth and start swimming… even doggie paddle will be better so that Wolmarans stops having the majority in the DA caucus.
If illness and tiredness aren’t a reason to step down and allow a replacement to step up, then Wolmaran’s decision is more likely to be based on not what’s best for the town but what’s best politically for her. That could even mean someone switching sides before the election.
Storm in a teacup or a storm? We’ll find out this afternoon in the Council Chambers at the Knysna Municipality.
