Alcohol, Knysna Public & Political Hypocrites

Mike Hampton Posted on 11th Dec 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

It was win for the Knysna public that protested against the Democratic Alliance’s push to make designated public drinking areas for the holiday season. The DA’s intention was in stark contrast to alcohol related, accidental deaths and a community problem amplified by severe joblessness. It led to a political mess deeply underscored with racism. It made DA supporters, mostly white (middle class and affluent), bewildered and angry. Bad behaviour and safety beside our waterways was more their concern than alcohol itself. Opposing them with the “Yes Vote” were ICOSA, ANC … Read the full article…

Peter Myers & the Stupid Public Drinking Proposal for Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 18th Nov 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Hopefully last night’s meeting regarding the proposed law for public drinking in Knysna was a brain opener for those new to Knysna politics and how our local government works (or is that “doesn’t work”?). Personally, it was important to me to have the public witness a fraction of the challenges i’ve faced in trying to get answers and sense out of our politicians and municipal employees. We were in Council Chambers for a rare Ward 10 (Knysna Central) public participation meeting regarding the topic that found social media ablaze the … Read the full article…

Mike Hampton Posted on 23rd Oct 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Visit Dronkgat… err… i mean Knysna, the prettiest town for public alcoholism in South Africa. Ok, i’ve been away for 2 days, leaving you with scheduled posts but this is an original because i bumped into someone who wanted to know what my thoughts were on the Knysna Mayoral Committee’s approval of opening the beaches to alcohol in December. Well, i responded, i already thought that Mayor Georlene Wolmarans made crazy decisions against our town but her political suicide wasn’t on the list. The DA’s support of business at a … Read the full article…

What Say Knysna Regards Bars Open at 7.30am?

Mike Hampton Posted on 22nd Jan 2013 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

A lot of readers landed on the blog about alcohol trading allowed on Sundays in Knysna but few of you went to the more important article which is the actual trading hours. Lowlights would be that bars are allowed to open from 7.30am 7 days per week and that liquor stores are now permitted Sunday trading.  This is a radical step and seemingly unjustified by Mayor Georlene Wolmarans’ assertion that this will be good for our tourism industry. Reality is that tourists are seasonal and an absolute minority out of … Read the full article…
