A message from Jacob Zuma… “On 26 August 2012‚ I appointed a Commission of Inquiry to investigate matters of public‚ national and international concern arising out of the tragic incidents at the Lonmin Mine in Marikana‚ Rustenburg in the North West province‚ during 11 to 16 August 2012. 5 months ago, 70 000 workers downed tools on South Africa’s platinum mines. Critics considered their demand for R12 500 plus benefits to be absurd. Mining companies prophesied collapse. Strikers considered it a reasonable call for a minimum, livable wage.
