So long, South Africa, and thanks for all the fish…

Mike Hampton Posted on 23rd Aug 2020 by mikehampton23rd Aug 2020

I gave 10 years to fighting corruption. Unfortunately, no one stood with me in a meaningful way. South Africa is broken. Maybe, in a different way, I am too.  But I don’t regret having represented what I believe in. The best lesson I learned was minimalism. Most material things don’t matter. I would like to own a small fridge but there’s no need for a car or a big TV. I’ve handled 6-months of lockdown well. I’ve spent so much time alone, much longer than that, that I don’t need … Read the full article…

Do-ism: My personal centrist ideology for a better South Africa

Mike Hampton Posted on 11th Apr 2019 by mikehampton3rd Feb 2020
Mike Hampton's political and community ideology and do-ism

There’s no perfect system or ism wherein human animals are involved. We deserve the right to enjoy the rewards of our hard work. We’re inhuman if we don’t help the poor. Politics is best when centrist and growing the middle class, thus lessening the poor and containing the callously rich. Fighting corruption is the truth of all ideology, its litmus test. Do-ism, the act of doing something ourselves to make our world a better place. I never knew the word “do-ism” existed until a few minutes after this post… but … Read the full article…

Knysna Fire Victims Must Stand Together

Mike Hampton Posted on 30th Jun 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The government is leaving behind the victims of the Knysna Fire. After 23 days, no accommodation provided and serious questions remain unanswered. The public hasn’t been allowed to attend municipal meetings regarding the fire. Even the public Section 80 meetings have excluded the fire as a topic. I applaud the Knysna Municipality for reconnecting services but that isn’t an excuse to ignore so much more e.g. questions about donations, the fairness of distribution and the theft thereof. When i, Mike Hampton, made a call for fire victims to organise, our … Read the full article…

Video: ‘Out of the Ashes’ – Knysna Fire Community Spirit

Mike Hampton Posted on 23rd Jun 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

I’m glad to have been the AWAMB’s film crew’s Knysna tour guide in their search for the positive side of the Great Knysna Fire. Some of the heroes appearing here are Dane Izatt (who, along with the George Ski Boat Club fought fires in Lake Brenton and evacuated people from Brenton-on-Sea to Buffalo Bay (and then onward to Sedgefield), Nardus Rademeyer (who along with a handful of others saved houses in League Street after the place his family was renting burnt down), Phillip Schoifer (who drove from Cape Town to … Read the full article…
