Survival and murder on the way to work

Hlompho Mohapi - woman murdered in George

Hlompho Mohapi’s murder, stabbed and throat slit on the Garden Route, emphasises that people need to be able to live where they work… or jobs need to be created where most live. “Southern Cape Police are investigating the murder of a 25-year old woman from Thembalethu in George, Western cape. Hlompho Mohapi’s body was found on Thursday next to a gravel road near Herold’s Bay. She was stabbed and her throat was partially slit. Community members say she was given a lift to the airport, where she would have started … Read the full article…

DA Leaders backing Geordin Hill-Lewis backing alleged Knysna corruption?

Mike Hampton Posted on 5th Jun 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mmusi Maimane’s new Chief of Staff, isn’t concerned with DA corruption. Instead, he just deletes evidence as if it never happened. His emails are the sour cream on a dirty cake, prompting me to ask for official response. Attention DA National Spokesperson Refiloe Ntsekhe. At the heart of my complaints to Parliament and the Public Protector is the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) failure to investigate illegal tenders, illegal appointments, graft, intimidation, foul propaganda and abuse of the courts. I consider the DA’s failure directly related to the many DA … Read the full article…

Knysna Manager Attacked by Car Guard With Knife

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Jan 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Steven Langlands, a senior staff member of the Knysna Municipality, was attacked with a knife by a car guard in the parking lot of Myoli Beach in Sedgefield yesterday. Thankfully, there were only minor cuts. This can also serve as further warning to the public and local businesses to report fake car guards. I’m in admiration of Langlands for continuing his work immediately after the attack but also hope that this will be encouragement to Local Law Enforcement and the SAPS to finally, and effectively, address the ongoing problem of … Read the full article…

2 Videos: Cape Flats Township Struggles

Mike Hampton Posted on 9th Oct 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Township Lessons from the Cape of Good Hope tells the powerful story of people living in the Cape Flats area outside of Cape Town, South Africa. It’s 20 years after Apartheid. How do township residents in slums cope with crime, unemployment and poverty in a country still very much struggling with racism, underdevelopment and inequality? The Dorp (The Real Cape Town): A society challenged by gang violence and drug abuse but with people that want to make a difference. We follow four characters representing four generations (childhood, youth, adulthood and … Read the full article…

Dear Mayor, What About Knysna Crime?

Mike Hampton Posted on 26th Sep 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

I sent Mayor Eleonore Bouw-Spies questions regarding Knysna crime. Unfortunately, she hasn’t responded, again denting her election promises of transparency and communication. I don’t believe that politicians, especially a mayor, get to ignore one of our biggest problems and fears. Sure, the SAPS are primarily responsible but it’s become far too easy for elected leaders to pass all the responsibility onto them. It’s even worse if the Democratic Alliance does it because that’s basically shifting the blame onto the ANC, a convenience of politics. A real leader doesn’t do that. … Read the full article…
