Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Speech 2013

Mike Hampton Posted on 18th Feb 2013 by Mike Hampton1st Nov 2020

Honourable Members, compatriots and friends… On the 15th of August last year, the National Planning Commission handed over the National Development Plan, the vision of the country for the next 20 years, to the President in this august house. The NDP contains proposals for tackling the problems of poverty, inequality and unemployment. It is a road map to a South Africa where all will have water, electricity, sanitation, jobs, housing, public transport, adequate nutrition, education, social protection, quality healthcare, recreation and a clean environment. The achievement of these goals has … Read the full article…

Crime Surge in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 5th Oct 2011 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

I’m well aware of crime, having experienced much of it in Durban. I’ve seen enough blood. I know what it’s like to fear for my life. Once settled in Knysna, i was a realist and expressed to others that Knysna was simply ahead of the curve and that crime was inescapable due to socio-economics. People have gotten a lot poorer since then and more are abusing drugs. Crime, like an inevitable monster from a horror movie, has caught our beautiful town. So what is happening in Knysna? The majority of … Read the full article…

Raped and Stabbed and Shot at…

Mike Hampton Posted on 9th Aug 2011 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Life has become extremely challenging on the Garden Route. Robberies, drugs, rates, electricity and unemployment are on the increase whilst tourists decrease. Stress alone threatens the family unit. ROBBED Of 5 of my neighbours I’ve spoken to in Knysna, 5 had been robbed. Some robberies have turned to violence. Empty shops are obvious in Knysna but a much bigger problem may be the number of owners behind on rent and hanging on for dear life. The Recession (or a return to normal) is here to stay so we need to … Read the full article…

Tik: Knysna’s Most Dangerous Drug

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Jul 2011 by mikehampton25th Jan 2021

Tik is one of the most dangerous drugs in the world and nowhere more concentrated than on the Cape Flats in the Western Province of South Africa where in 1 in every 10 children have tried it. It’s reached my little home town of Knysna, 450km up the Eastern coast, eating at our slogan, “The Beautiful Town”, and scaring me shitless. I’m forced to refer to outside resources as the reason for me blogging is because of the dire lack of local information which, in turn, suggests a dire lack … Read the full article…

DA Takes Knysna's Steering Wheel

Mike Hampton Posted on 22nd May 2011 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Good projects and ideas should be supported for what they are and not according to whoever is in power. In the case of South Africa, i’d be referring to those most likely to govern a town; the ANC (African National Congress) and the DA (Democratic Alliance). I say that because The Keep wants to deal with whoever will help and support. Nevertheless, it’s interesting times for the DA has not only taken back the steering wheel of power in our beautiful town of Knysna but also won control of most … Read the full article…
