1961 witnessed the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). For the Afrikaners, the same day and month was called Day of the Vow, a celebration of their victory over the mighty Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838.
