The Future: How will South Africa fit in?

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Dec 2019 by mikehampton15th Dec 2019
The future of the world and South Africa's place in it

The best way to end 2019 is to look forward. Bloomberg has released an exciting article about our global future. In contrast, I fear a better world needs losers, and that us South Africans may fill that role. I’d appreciate your thoughts, especially those that have good reason to disagree with me. URBANISATION FACTS 1. 3.2 billion people will be middle class in 2020, an enormous increase from 1.8 billion in 2009. This positivity results from the economic advances of India and China (which makes me think that Africa desperately … Read the full article…

ISDF Update: Stop Messing With Our Money!

Mike Hampton Posted on 29th Jan 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The Knysna Council meeting on Thursday, January 28, finally acknowledged the death of municipal employee, Rudolf Kapp, and the injuries of traffic officers, Anthony Bans and Ernest Nqoko a.k.a. Smiley. In her opening speech, Mayor Georlene Wolmarans mentioned her disapproval of discrimination but that fell on my hollow ears in view of the DA’s election campaign timing of the anti-racism topic (i will give that a blog on its own). When questioned, she admitted that during the recent holiday season there’d been regular water pipe bursts on the East Head. … Read the full article…

Help Us Help Knysna’s Children

Mike Hampton Posted on 7th Nov 2015 by mikehampton7th Nov 2015

HELP US HELP KNYSNA’S CHILDREN… and have fun whilst doing so. Knysna is the prettiest town in South Africa but suffers from a great divide between the rich and the poor. Love Knysna Projects is a group of volunteers (mostly moms and dads) building a bridge, between those two worlds, for children. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds rarely get to experience the joys of their own town. When you ask them where they stay, some don’t answer with “Knysna”. Instead, they mention the suburb they come from or say “township, showing … Read the full article…

Are Schools Killing the Creativity Needed for an Unpredictable Future

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Sep 2014 by mikehampton15th Sep 2014

Is school the right place for your child or should they be homeschooled? It’s a question that man parents have asked even if they’re both forced to work. No school has the same standards as another but concerns in Knysna, whether true or false, are that: Government classes are overcrowded, teachers overstressed and drug usage has increased, culminating in growing teen crime and, overall, an unhealthy, lessor education than should be possible. The lack of discipline is  a major concern. Conversely, a well respected private school has been criticised for … Read the full article…

Is Our Future Dead or Alive?

Mike Hampton Posted on 19th Aug 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

I do what i do to fight our devolution in Knysna and our membership of of the human race… but with so few in the fight and with most treating our common struggles like movies (discussed, criticised but never part of), i sometimes despair. Sure, i’ll post a happy picture after this on my Facebook and try defy with happy Knysna thoughts but that doesn’t alter that this is one of those depressing mornings where i ask myself razorblade questions sharper than band-aids. Knysna is bankrupt… and will remain so … Read the full article…
