History: 45 Fichat Street (Circa 1895)

This heritage building can be found opposite Knysna High School. The property was transferred to George Cruikshank in 1881 from the Anglican Bishop of Cape Town, having bought the property from the estate of John Sutherland. Cruikshank later sold the property to James Henry Templeman, who built this house for his daughter, May Metelerkamp. The builder was LN Willis, who was then manager of Templeman’s sawmill. Templeman’s Store aka Templeman’s Arcade (1883)

Built as a store in 1883 for Mrs Brown’s (later Templeman) shop across the road. Partially used after 1895 by Wehrle Jewellers. In 1913, converted by owner, James Templeman, into a General Dealers shop on transferring the business from across the road. He added the plate glass windows in front. Bought by Thesen & Co. and closed on sale of the business to Barlow Rand in the mid 1970’s. In modern times, tourist buses often stop outside, seeking nearby coffee shops.
