Quay 4 & SANParks Rocked Again

Mike Hampton Posted on 22nd Nov 2015 by mikehampton22nd Nov 2015

HOW & WOW With only 3 hours of our time, petrol and R590 we made 23 teenagers love Knysna more – that’s education and fun at a bargain! A month ago, we took a bunch of primary schoolers from Hornlee and Khayalethu to Quay 4 for breakfast and to Knysna SANParks for an educational talk about the endangered Knysna Seahorse. This time we did it with teenagers. THE TRIP With more volunteers, we are now able to separate the younglings from the teens. On a big outing, like the end … Read the full article…

Franklin University Students Have Fun Education in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 17th Mar 2015 by mikehampton17th Mar 2015

22 students from Franklin University Switzerland, led by Professor Armando Zanecchia, explored Knysna this week. This was part of their Academic Travel program which focuses on the challenges of economic and political development, as well as related issues of wildlife and natural resource conservation. The majority of the students were from the USA but made more worldly by those from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. Most are currently studying International Relations and International Management. They stayed in the idyllic countryside of Rheenendal. Ocean Odyssey gave them the joys of … Read the full article…

Blue Hills Farm Kids' Trip

Mike Hampton Posted on 3rd Dec 2014 by mikehampton3rd Dec 2014

We ended the year with a lovely trip to Blue Hills Farm which lies 25km from Knysna and 5km before Plettenberg Bay. It never fails to thrill me that there are hidden gems such as this dotted all over the Garden Route. Blue Hills is primarily a supplier of colourful, screeching, talkative and beautiful parrots – there are so many of them! Peacocks thrill with displays and a lovely playground calls out to children, “Come play!” There are pigs, llama and emu. Even a horse and, to the delight of … Read the full article…

American Student Visits Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 8th Nov 2014 by mikehampton8th Nov 2014

Conservation Global is hosting Elisabeth ‘Elly’ Leaning, a student from the countryside outside Boston USA. Elly is researching food security and is interested in places in Knysna where people are growing food for themselves. Conservation Global asked me if i knew of any such people or organisations. I took them to the grounds of the Knysna chapter of Epilepsy South Africa first. Everybody we met was so friendly! And the views of Knysna were gorgeous and contrasting, from White Location and the prison to the whole of central Knysna and … Read the full article…

Fun at Knysna Elephant Park!

Mike Hampton Posted on 27th Oct 2014 by mikehampton27th Oct 2014

Thanks to volunteer Monica a.k.a. Moo (and her car, lunches and ice-cream), 4 kids from Judah Square (Omega, Manuel, Benji and Naphitite) got to enjoy the Open Day at Knysna Elephant Park (KEP). I got to tag along:) Normally R250 per adult and R110 per child, free entrance had over 2300 people, mostly locals, greeting the elephants and enjoying the stalls and restaurants – it was a huge success i’m hoping KEP will consider hosting annually. We started off by drinking coffee whilst the kids explored the play area. After … Read the full article…

UCT Students Have Fun at Judah Square!

Mike Hampton Posted on 29th Sep 2014 by mikehampton29th Sep 2014

40 people – 7 teachers, 32 students and 1 bus driver – experienced cultural immersion when they slept over at Judah Square, Knysna’s Rastafari community, late in August 2014. Organised by the University of Capetown (UCT), the students were a diverse bunch hailing from Germany, Brazil, Switzerland and South Africa. It was the biggest group sleep over Judah Square had accommodated. With only 6 beds for backpackers, the homes of local residents were opened to them for a personal and interactive experience. Their Thursday evening arrival was, for both sides, … Read the full article…
