Percy Mdala High School Sings Me Shivers

Mike Hampton Posted on 11th Sep 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

There’s something about a mass of black, African voices that sends joyful shivers through me. It’s not about the lyrics (i’m an ignorant bugger) but something emotional on a primal level, something my whitie ancestors maybe lost as they were building ships to populate foreign lands they had no intention of belonging to. This isn’t political commentary. Times have changed. Colonialism is dead and i’m a White African, born and bred through tough and love. This is appreciation for the minute of joy as i heard Knysna’s Percy Mdala High … Read the full article…

Quay 4 & SANParks Rocked Again

Mike Hampton Posted on 22nd Nov 2015 by mikehampton22nd Nov 2015

HOW & WOW With only 3 hours of our time, petrol and R590 we made 23 teenagers love Knysna more – that’s education and fun at a bargain! A month ago, we took a bunch of primary schoolers from Hornlee and Khayalethu to Quay 4 for breakfast and to Knysna SANParks for an educational talk about the endangered Knysna Seahorse. This time we did it with teenagers. THE TRIP With more volunteers, we are now able to separate the younglings from the teens. On a big outing, like the end … Read the full article…

BSR Overland – A 4×4, Healing Adventure

Mike Hampton Posted on 8th Aug 2012 by mikehampton8th Aug 2012

I recently made a website for Aki a.k.a. Alexander von Glasow as a prelude to his Cape to Cairo, 4×4 trip. Aki is an interesting character. He’s an international model and ex-European Downhill Skateboarding Champion. Beneath that jet-setting, professional exterior is a gentle heart which is why he’s been training as a Body Stress Release practitioner in Rondevlei, just outside Knysna. His goal is to cross Africa, staying in villages for extended periods so that he can help the poor with this pain and stress alleviating technique. Dylan the Dog, … Read the full article…

Stepping Stones School Musical Celebration for Africa Day

Mike Hampton Posted on 13th Jun 2012 by mikehampton13th Jun 2012

Stepping Stones School celebrated their annual Music Day on 25 May with parents, friends and special guests from Garden Gates. This year the idea was to expose the children to different genres of music. The children from each class sang for the guests. The Grade 3’s and 4’s gave a polished performance of Gumboot dancing, much to the delight of the audience. Renard De Vries, in Grade 2, was outstanding with his dance and look alike Michael Jackson. Mr James Smith’s hidden talent was discovered when he sang Andrew Lloyd Webber’s … Read the full article…
