Knysna Municipality will fight Elandskraal’s Knysna Fire victims

Mike Hampton Posted on 13th Jun 2020 by mikehampton13th Jun 2020

Maroela Media reports that the Knysna Municipality will oppose the R17.2-million Great Knysna Fire claim against it by 19 residents from Elandskraal, the origin of the disaster. The Knysna Fire’s many victims know well that it began with a lighting strike in the Elandskraal bush several months before the disaster. Residents repeatedly appealed for assistance to the Knysna Municipality and its fire services. They even provided aerial footage of the first smoulder which indicated burning underground. Ignoring them led to the destruction of 1059 homes, 7 deaths and an estimated … Read the full article…

Knysna Fire Victims Must Stand Together

Mike Hampton Posted on 30th Jun 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The government is leaving behind the victims of the Knysna Fire. After 23 days, no accommodation provided and serious questions remain unanswered. The public hasn’t been allowed to attend municipal meetings regarding the fire. Even the public Section 80 meetings have excluded the fire as a topic. I applaud the Knysna Municipality for reconnecting services but that isn’t an excuse to ignore so much more e.g. questions about donations, the fairness of distribution and the theft thereof. When i, Mike Hampton, made a call for fire victims to organise, our … Read the full article…

Human Settlement to Assist Knysna & Plett Fire Victims

Mike Hampton Posted on 24th Jun 2017 by Mike Hampton1st Nov 2020

Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, says all provincial Human Settlement Departments will make 5% of their budget available for housing in the Knysna and Plettenberg Bay areas. This after devastating fires destroyed over 800 properties and caused hundreds of millions rand worth of damages. She met local government officials in Knysna on Thursday. Still coming to terms with the devastation, Thembile Plaatjie lost most of his house to the fire. Only one room survived, but his neighbours lost everything. Temporary housing will soon be supplied to those who have been … Read the full article…

Knysna Fire Victim Necessities

Mike Hampton Posted on 23rd Jun 2017 by mikehampton6th Jan 2021

There’s a long list of Knysna Fire victim necessities but this is what I most want: 1. Meaningful interaction with rentees who lost everything, the supplying of accommodation or subsidising of accommodation that we cannot afford. 2. For the Municipality to work with private donation groups who have the best ideas e.g. Knysna Families in Need, the possibility of the Lions establishing a permanent disaster centre in Knysna servicing Eden District. 3. Determined investigation and prosecution of municipal employees involved in large scale theft from donation depots. 4. Investigation into … Read the full article…

Knysna Fire Builder’s Rubble Waste Disposal Site

Mike Hampton Posted on 20th Jun 2017 by Mike Hampton20th Jun 2017

The Western Cape Government has approved the Knysna Municipality’s rubble waste disposal site on privately owned land off the Simola/Blaricum Heights road for the next six months to temporarily store building rubble resulting from the emergency situation that related to fires in early June. The municipality has requested permission to have this builder’s waste material crushed on site. It is important to note that no hazardous materials, such as chemicals and asbestos will be allowed to be dumped on this site. The tip can be accessed from three different directions. … Read the full article…
