Knysna Stormwater & Sewer Connection Audit Begins

Mike Hampton Posted on 2nd May 2013 by mikehampton2nd May 2013

A door-to-door audit of Knysna’s stormwater and sewerage connections starts this week. The audit is a key project within the ongoing Knysna Estuary Pollution Action Plan, which was launched by the municipality in association with several other stakeholders last year to reduce pollution into the Knysna Lagoon. Knysna Municipal Manager Lauren Waring, who is also the chairperson of the Knysna Estuary Pollution Control Task Committee, said the audit was aimed at detecting and correcting illegal stormwater and sewer connections as well as a determining the overall status of these systems … Read the full article…

Postcard From a Smelly, Old Lagoon

Mike Hampton Posted on 16th Jun 2012 by mikehampton16th Jun 2012

I bumped into a wonderful blog by Koekalooks whose real name is Jenny Mason. Her reminiscing of her childhood holidays in Knysna made me smile. She’ll make you smile too. When i jokingly asked her to spice up the story with a photo of the urban legend of a great white shark in Knysna Estuary a.k.a. the Knysna Lagoon, she responded with, “No but if I fish around in my old photo boxes I’m sure I’d find some very spicy other shots. I had a really lekka shot of my … Read the full article…

Knysna Estuary a.k.a. Knysna Lagoon photos

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Jun 2012 by mikehampton12th Jun 2012

I can rightfully boast that we have the most beautiful estuary in South Africa. Yes, it’s actually the “Knysna Estuary”, not the “Knysna Lagoon” because The Heads provide a channel for the partly enclosed water to reach the sea. In fact, it used to be called Featherbed Bay as it provided calm waters to sailors escaping rough seas. The Knysna Estuary is a big part of our lives. Our suburbs border it or look down on it, from Hornlee and Hunter’s Home through White Location and Knysna Heights to Belvidere … Read the full article…

Brenton-On-Lake hike photos

Mike Hampton Posted on 28th May 2012 by mikehampton28th May 2012

I love this part of Knysna so much that i had to debate with myself whether to share it with the world:) It stretches from Brenton-on-Lake to Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head. It’s mostly secluded so best to go with someone or as a group. If you do encounter anyone, it’s likely to be a fisherman and his family (who sometimes sleep on the beach overnight). The effect of the Knysna Estuary (misnamed by many as the Knysna Lagoon) tide has produced small beaches with their own identity. … Read the full article…

Why?

Mike Hampton Posted on 11th Nov 2011 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

I’ve battled to survive with a roof over my head…so how did the old vagrant stay alive by living in the bushes in my road during winter? I wonder how Knysna still stands with the majority unemployed? I’m unable to comprehend how the masses of poor (so far) can look down, from their nearby hills, at the thousands of large houses and cars without succumbing to debilitating depression or overwhelming anger? How do people live in such a small town but, after years, have never visited what they can see … Read the full article…
