Cows Arrested in front of Knysna Magistrates’ Court

Mike Hampton Posted on 4th May 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Knysna’s traffic cops arrested cows today but had trouble trying to get them to go across the Main Road to appear in the Knysna Magistrates’ Court. The cows are expected to moo in defence before the Chief Magistrate. They’ll be calling Manager Protection Services Richard Meyer as a witness to testify that the Knysna Municipality believes that there are separate rules for white cow owners and black cow owners. By municipal by-law, only black-owned cows and pigs are allowed to walk in Knysna Central.

R4.7-million in Knysna Traffic Fines Over 3 Months

Mike Hampton Posted on 28th Sep 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Knysna Municipality raised approximately R4.7-million rand from traffic fines during June, July and August 2016. The Knysna Traffic & Law Enforcement’s reports were presented to the Section 80 Community Services Meeting held on September 27 2016. Although that figure may seem high, it’s in fact low considering that over 42 000 tickets were issued. What that means is that most fines are not being paid. The best way to increase the collection rate will be the introduction of a Municipal Court. It was also reported that during that 3-month period … Read the full article…

Did Ignored Safety Rules Kill Employee & Injure Others?

Mike Hampton Posted on 13th Jan 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Attention: Heidi Cronje (Health & Safety Officer Knysna Municipality), Dawie Adonis (Director Community Services) and Irene Grootboom (DA Councillor & Community Services S80 Chairperson) A man is dead and two others were hospitalised. I hope that you care enough about that fact so that you abandon the Knysna Municipality’s usual, unconstitutional silence. On the morning of January 7 2015, Rudolph Kapp, an employee of our Knysna Municipality, a man in your care, died as the result of an accident inside the Municipal Depot in the Industrial Area. Allegedly, a truck, … Read the full article…

Major Accident Kills 5 in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 14th Dec 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

< div data-contents=”true”> A major accident has killed 5 in Knysna… I have never been driven around as much as i was when my father visited, with a rent-a-car, the past 9 days. I boasted about our beautiful area, ‘back-seat driving’ him from Sedgefield to The Crags and from Knysna’s centre to Karatara.   My father never understood my repeated warnings, falsely assured by an N2 he considered to be in good condition and with long visibility. “Dad, you haven’t met the fools who ride along here.”   Knots grew … Read the full article…

Alcohol Roadblocked on Leisure Isle

Mike Hampton Posted on 31st Dec 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Tonight, New Year’s Eve, will find Knysna Municipality placing a roadblock at the entrance to the affluent suburb of Leisure Isle in order to search for, and confiscate, alcohol. No matter the reasoning, this will only inflame recent racial tension, especially considering that there was alcohol at Carols by Candlelight, a mostly white attended event. We have to handle things better than this otherwise they will explode at some stage and the situation will become worse than before. “LIRA (Leisure Isle Ratepayers’ Association) wishes to notify residents, your visitors and … Read the full article…

8200 Informal Houses in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 20th Oct 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

There are an estimated 8200 informal houses in Knysna! This was mentioned in a Section 80 meeting addressing the concerns over fires in backyard dwellings. These structures often take power through extensions from the main building, creating the possibility of overload leading to fire. The Community Services Committee has recommended that Brackenhill’s community (population 389 adults and 116 school-going children) apply for affiliation to the Provincial Library Services so that they can gain a wheelie wagon library. The Knysna Municipality will carry the running costs of the facility but province … Read the full article…

Knysna Vehicle Testing Station Case Drags On

Mike Hampton Posted on 9th Oct 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

20 months after the Knysna Vehicle Testing Station closed down, the hearings for two of the officers allegedly involved in irregularities is still ongoing. What happened to the other officers involved is unknown. This is a chronology of events as supplied by Corporate Services to the Governance Committee. It shows how dysfunctional, inefficient and frustrating our justice system is. Are Knysna Municipality’s lawyers up to the challenge posed by union lawyers?

14 889 Speeding Fines Issued in Knysna in July 2014

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Sep 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

It seems too many to be true but Knysna’s Traffic & Law Enforcement department issued 14 889 speeding fines in July this year. The total revenue collected from speedsters was almost R1.2million which means the annual gain would be in the region of R20million. As large as this amount is,  the majority of monies are not being collected. Although fines can take up to 2 years to be collected, there would be continuous month revenue i.e. it doesn’t matter from when it originated for us to work out an average … Read the full article…
