Teniqua Treetops For Bird Lovers

Mike Hampton Posted on 26th Jan 2017 by Mike Hampton26th Jan 2017

Teniqua Treetops in Knysna is a bird-watching paradise, accommodation with a major difference! We looked at building bird-hides before realising that each tree-house is a bird-hide 🙂 Awaken each morning to the sensual dawn chorus. We are visited by over a 100 different varieties of birds. We are blessed with the Knysna Turaco (Knysna Loerie) every day. Teniqua Treetops is located on 26 hectares of pristine indigenous forest; 3 hectares of fynbos and 6 hectares of open grassland. This encourages a range of birds. There is a wild-fig tree in … Read the full article…

Big Boy, the Loerie Bird

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st May 2016 by mikehampton9th Nov 2020

He was the most beautiful boy I’d ever seen; green like the earth, blue like a stormy sea. I was beautiful too; wiser in the moment, a better human being… For 6 and half years I’ve failed to get a quarter-decent photo of a Knysna Loerie bird. Traditionally, they’re shy. For 9 months that failure has been emphasised because the complex where I moved to has a large, resident Loerie I’ve name Big Boy.   In previous places where I stayed, I was used to small flocks of Loeries moving … Read the full article…

Vote for the Knysna Loerie Bird

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Feb 2015 by mikehampton15th Feb 2015

Draw more attention to Knysna by taking one minute to vote for my favourite bird, the Knysna Turaco a.k.a. the Knysna Loerie. The experts at BirdLife South Africa have whittled down the list of South Africa’s birds to 52 species and invite all South Africans to “meet some of your neighbours” and vote for their favourite bird in a fun and feathery poll. Voting closes on 28 February 2015. Click here to cast your vote. One person, one vote. NOTE THAT VOTING BUTTON IS TO THE TOP LEFT OF THE … Read the full article…

Love Knysna Projects Logo

Mike Hampton Posted on 25th Jan 2013 by mikehampton16th Dec 2020

Tonya Laure-Smith was also the creator of the Love Knysna Projects logo. She tolerated my pesky opinions and alteration requests. We debated until we were “blue in the face” 🙂 It was worth it. We were both very happy with the result! The loerie bird (Knysna Turaco) is continued from the Love Knysna logo. Local photographer, Jan Fourie, was kind of enough to extend permission to use it here. Lovely, hey?
