What Happened at Hornlee’s Public Drinking Meeting

Mike Hampton Posted on 28th Nov 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Keith Hollis (Leisure Isle) and Ralph Stander (Hornlee) spoke at the Ward 9 public participation meeting (held in Hornlee) regarding the proposed public drinking areas during the holiday season. Although both men made several sensible points, the body language of the public suggests disagreement before beginning i.e. whites on one side of the hall, coloureds on the other.

Sunny Hike on Leisure Isle

Mike Hampton Posted on 31st Mar 2015 by mikehampton31st Mar 2015

It had been 22 months since we’d taken kids to Leisure Isle in Knysna so it was high time we returned to its magnificent Bollard Bay Beach and Kingfisher Creek. There were 18 kids and 8 of us adults. As the tide was just turning, we still had time to take the short cut to Kingfisher’s Creek (the beach on the other side that faces Thesen Islands), around the bend via the sandy shore and beautiful, beachfront houses. Sea lettuce and moss accompanied our footsteps much of the way. From … Read the full article…

Alcohol Roadblocked on Leisure Isle

Mike Hampton Posted on 31st Dec 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Tonight, New Year’s Eve, will find Knysna Municipality placing a roadblock at the entrance to the affluent suburb of Leisure Isle in order to search for, and confiscate, alcohol. No matter the reasoning, this will only inflame recent racial tension, especially considering that there was alcohol at Carols by Candlelight, a mostly white attended event. We have to handle things better than this otherwise they will explode at some stage and the situation will become worse than before. “LIRA (Leisure Isle Ratepayers’ Association) wishes to notify residents, your visitors and … Read the full article…

Kyle Maspero remains on bail in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Jul 2014 by mikehampton7th Apr 2021

I had one of my readers contact me to say how weird she felt bumping into Kyle Maspero on Leisure Isle whilst “Racy” was in jail and “Rosie” was dead. Coincidentally, some mates and I had also bumped into him a week before that, also on Leisure Isle, at Green Hole – he and his foster father, Martin Hatchuel, were taking their dogs for a walk. Kyle Maspero and his girlfriend, Phoenix Theron, were accused of killing her mother, Rosemary Theron, in Cape Town in 2013. Phoenix has since confessed … Read the full article…

The Apartheid of Leisure Isle, Knysna (Part 1)

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Mar 2014 by mikehampton1st Jan 2021

“You’re going to die, kaffir,” repeated Uncle Steven, more as a wish than a statement, to the black man dying on the ground behind the supermarket that was part of our everyday lives in the suburbs outside Durban. My teen self was caught between horrors. The first was the poor man who had been stabbed so many times with a short tool or knife that I battled to count all the holes in his shirt through which lung bubbles escaped with blood. The second was the hate in every word … Read the full article…

Death, Life and You…

Mike Hampton Posted on 22nd Dec 2013 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Feeling melancholic and didn’t know where to put this…so i put it here… In the swig of a beer and beyond the lagoon-that-is-really-an-estuary, further than the incoming tide, grey (white-flushed), 4-foot waves, and below a cold orgasm of sun, the world i’ve never experienced was witnessed by me without me seeing the world i knew, the world behind me. Despite being directionless, i knew that i’d be robbed of the sight of certain people if i turned around because Knysna had recently lost 4 little girls in 2 incidents off … Read the full article…
