Government: No Houses for Next 10 Years

Mike Hampton Posted on 2nd Jun 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

South African politics seems to be based most on the promises and lies about providing houses to the poor. Kararata, a poor town falling under the Knysna Municipality, appears to be the latest victim… and possibly a metaphor for greater government admitting to itself that their housing plans have failed. Karatara, population 1000, is out of sight, 14km inland from Sedgefield and 35km from Knysna Central. It should play host to tourists wanting to explore the scenic Seven Passes route between George and Knysna, but few travel that final section … Read the full article…

Sedgefield Waste Water Plant to get R6-million Upgrade

Mike Hampton Posted on 15th Jul 2015 by Public Contributor1st Nov 2020

Knysna Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans announced during her state of the town address that an amount of R6-million has been allocated for the upgrading of Sedgefield’s Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW). The WWTW has been operating for a number of years and the plant has reached its nominal capacity of 0.75Ml/day. “Council has long been concerned with the town’s WWTW. In 2013 an investigation was conducted and from the report it was evident that the works were being overloaded in terms of the hydraulic loading and did not meet the … Read the full article…

Knysna Water Situation Remains Serious Concern

Mike Hampton Posted on 24th Feb 2015 by mikehampton24th Feb 2015

In this press release, the Knysna Municipality urges residents to continuously conserve water! The water situation in the Knysna area remains a serious concern. We are not faced with a crisis yet, however, if water usage is not reduced Knysna could face a serious problem and can be catastrophic. Chairperson of the Planning, Infrastructure and Development Committee, Councillor Louisa Hart said “the current average demand for Knysna is 12.5 megalitres (Ml) daily. We are only able to pump from the Knysna River 9.5 Ml per day leaving us with a … Read the full article…

Tender Vanishes from Knysna Municipality

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st Dec 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Hot on the heels of Knysna Municipality’s tender controversy that resulted in senior management accusing even more senior management of manipulating tenders, a tender involving vehicles has gone missing. T29/2014 was for the supply of vehicles and equipment. Before they quit, the Bid Evaluation Committee reported that the tender of Nissan Knysna had gone missing. I do not allude to wrongdoing on their part but it is common knowledge that Nissan Knysna has been accused of favoritism from the Municipality. Lauren Waring’s reaction, at the November 27 Council Meeting on her … Read the full article…

Good News: Housing for Hornlee

Mike Hampton Posted on 13th Nov 2014 by mikehampton16th Jan 2021

From Noetzie’s reservoir to Fisherhaven, a much-needed housing project is on its way for Hornlee in Knysna. The first phase will erect 359 houses, approximately one-third of the target: 40m² BNG units (less R3500 salary earners) – 92 FLISP (T3501-18000 salary earners) – 267 bonded units Open Market (above R18001 salary earners) – not determined Coincidentally, I was asked the previous day what RDP housing means and was unable to answer despite it being such a common acronym. A Google search responded with “Reconstruction and Development Programme”.  BNG was RDP … Read the full article…

Knysna ANC Councillors to be Disciplined

Mike Hampton Posted on 2nd Oct 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

“People are frustrated. We cannot deny that our roads will never be like the roads going to The Heads. Money goes elsewhere.” -Councillor Wiseman Litoli (September 25 2014) Back in July this year i reported in ‘Priorities Disagreement Makes Special Development Meeting a Bust’ that a Special Planning, Development and Infrastructure Committee Meeting was called to discuss Knysna’s roads budget, a contentious and difficult issue considering the inadequate finances being received to fix our ailing infrastructure. It was supposed to be a ‘Special’ meeting about roads yet roads had been … Read the full article…
