Bravery Award for Brother of Knysna Shark Attack Victim

On Saturday, 29 August, Alexander Swanepoel was honoured for his bravery in risking his life to save his brother Caleb during the shark encounter at Buffalo Bay. Your courage and selfless act saved Caleb’s life. Well done. NSRI’s Mike Elliot and Jerome Simonis visited the family at their home today to present the award. Knysna Holidaymakers Saves Drowning Men

At 15h45, Saturday, 07th March, NSRI Knysna launched the sea rescue craft JAYTEE III and SPIRIT OF KYC following reports of a dinghy, with three men on-board, capsized on Knysna Estuary between the Thesen Island Jetty and the Railway Bridge. On arrival on-scene all 3 local men were found safe on a mud bank. 2 of the men were suffering near drowning symptoms with breathing difficulties and treated by NSRI medics and then transported to hospital in stable conditions by WC Government Health EMS ambulance for observation for secondary drowning. … Read the full article…

NSRI Knysna Has Been Busy This Weekend!

It takes more than “just a shipwreck” to keep Knysna’s NSRI (national Sea Rescue Institute) busy. Here’s a news update from the horse’s mouth: NSRI Knysna are continuing to assist at the Kiani Satu ship that ran aground near Buffels Bay on Friday 09th August. NSRI Knysna’s role is to provide on scene safety stand-by while salvage operations progress and sea rescue craft and sea rescue volunteers from NSRI Knysna will remain involved and on-scene for safety until they are released by SAMSA (South African Maritime safety Authority).
