Knysna 2016 Matric Results Rollercoaster

Mike Hampton Posted on 5th Jan 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The good 2016 Matric results news for 3 Knysna schools is dampened by the drop in two others. Concordia High School’s situation is alarming. This is after 28 subjects had their results questionably adjusted upwards by Umalusi, South Africa’s education quality control board. 55.1% – Concordia High School (vs 68.2% pass rate in 2016 – dropped 13.1%) 78.1% – Percy Mdala High School (vs 86.8% pass rate in 2016 – dropped 8.7%) 86.6% – Knysna Secondary School (vs 79.5% pass rate in 2016 – up 7.1%) 100% – Knysna High School … Read the full article…

Cover Me includes Maya-Rose Torrao

Mike Hampton Posted on 31st Aug 2014 by mikehampton31st Aug 2014

I’m a fan of Cover Me, an online music zine based in the USA that points me at tributes. Cover songs not only show appreciation for musical heroes but ensure that their music reaches new generations. I was super pleased to find Knysna’s Maya-Rose Torrao included in their latest article which featured The Decemberists’ album, The Crane Wife. Maya-Rose had covered their ‘Summersong’. I’ve never met Maya-Rose but interviewed her via email after she did well in the 2012 De Beers English Olympiad. She was a student of Oakhill School then. … Read the full article…

Comedian Rob van Vuuren in Knysna – June 27/28

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Jun 2014 by mikehampton12th Jun 2014

“Rob van Vuuren became a comedian by mistake while he was trying to be an actor. It was bound to happen though, if you consider his shortness to awesomeness ratio multiplied by his genius and augmented by the fact that he is a bit of a dick. All the fun at Oakhill School on June 27 & 28 2014.

Knysna Students help River Action Project

Mike Hampton Posted on 20th May 2013 by mikehampton20th May 2013

Two rivers run alongside Oakhill School and down, and past, Stepping Stones into the Knysna Estuary. Grades 7 and 10 students have identified testing sites and are having the water professionally tested to identify pollution levels. Graeme Barnhoorn, of Sassenheim Estate, informed the schools about Effective Microorganisms which naturally treat pollution in rivers. The students were shown how to make the mud balls using EM liquid, pine bark and Oakhill clay. After 10 days, after the micro-organisms have multiplied, the balls were inserted into polluted areas. Follow-up tests will be … Read the full article…

Knysna Schools Website Project

Mike Hampton Posted on 21st Jan 2013 by mikehampton21st Jan 2013

We believe in education and awareness as fundamental connections to community happiness and financial freedom. www.KnysnaSchools.co.za aims to list all our educative bodies as most of our town is unaware that most exist. It hasn’t been a simple process as the municipality never had a list and were unhelpful. Some of the schools, despite being contacted many times, simply never send the information we need. Nevertheless, there has been progress and a number of them have been given a free page which includes a description, photo and contact details. Stage … Read the full article…

Oakhill Student Wins Big!

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st Jun 2012 by mikehampton1st Jun 2012

Although the final scores have yet to be announced, Maya-Rose Torrao, a student of Oakhill School in Knysna, has achieved a place in the Top 15 for the 2012 De Beers English Olympiad. It’s a phenomenal feat considering that she competed against 7300 students from across South Africa. It gains her a one year scholarship to Rhodes University and admits her into a special group of students who’ll be chaperoned at the 2012 National Schools’ Festival in Grahamstown in July. It’s there that the rank order will be announced, determining … Read the full article…
