As a follow-on to ‘Politicians’ Salary Increase Vote = Quickest Council Meeting’, here’s the new upper limit salaries for Knysna’s politicians. The official description is the ‘Determination of Upper Limits of Salaries, Allowances and Benefits of Different Members of Municipal Councils’ under the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act 1998. As they’re paid retrospectively, they can vote not to receive the back-pay, before Financial year end, normally May (somewhere close to election time). Greed and hypocrisy were evident, more than ever, at the Knysna Special Council Meeting held on January 12 2016. James Styan, the Spokesperson for Anton Bredell, the MEC for Local Government in the Western Cape, has issued a brief press release in response to media reports about excessive Municipal Manager salaries in the Western Cape: A New Government notice has been published with regards to the maximum salary notches for officials like municipal managers by the minister for Cogta, Pravin Gordhan. Yesterday, Die Burger dropped a bomb on the Western Cape’s claim to good governance and austerity with an article entitled ‘Verdien ‘Miljoene te Veel’ (‘Earning Millions too Much’). They were referring to the fact that the majority of Municipal Managers have been awarded salaries far in excess of what they are suppose to receive according to national guidelines.
