Last night’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in South Africa was as disruptive as expected. Earlier in the day, outside Parliament, supporters of President Jacob Zuma’s had ironically clashed with the police. Inside, it was a war of words that led to COPE and the EFF leaving the building but not before the latter had interrupted Zuma for 67-minutes. SONA: Police Fire Stun Grenades at EFF Protesters

Two loud bangs were heard when EFF protesters clashed with police near parliament hours before President Jacob Zuma was due to deliver his State of the Nation address on Thursday afternoon in Cape Town. A police line held back Economic Freedom Fighters protesters who were pushing their way through. Police were heard through loudhailers instructing protesters to move back, before firing stun grenades and rubber bullets into the crowds. Elections are on their way, possibly heralding an eventual fight for South Africa’s #1 position.
