Social Grants Recipients Surpass Those With Jobs

Mike Hampton Posted on 21st Jun 2017 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

There are more people receiving social grants in South Africa than there are people with jobs. This is the finding from the latest South Africa Survey published by the IRR last week. Furthermore, as the economy slows, the government will find it harder to expand the rollout of grants, or to increase their value. According to IRR analyst Gerbrandt van Heerden: “In 2016, there were 15 545 000 people with jobs in South Africa while 17 094 331 people were receiving social grants.” Van Heerden said, “The numbers are a recipe for … Read the full article…

Gordhan Charge Shows Rise of New Right Wing

Mike Hampton Posted on 12th Oct 2016 by Mike Hampton1st Nov 2020

Against the background of the criminal charge brought against the Minister of Finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan, the IRR has released a policy paper titled The Rise of the New Right: South Africa’s Road to 2024 on the prospects for a forced, quite authoritarian, economic reform process in South Africa. IRR CEO Dr Frans Cronje said: “The decision to charge Mr Gordhan with fraud ties into one of our scenarios that describes the rise of a new right wing in South Africa’s politics. One of the less explored policy avenues open … Read the full article…

The South African Institute of Race Relations stands ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) after raid – warns of ‘David versus Goliath” battle to safeguard democracy. The Institute of Race Relations has noted the raid on the offices of the Helen Suzman Foundation. The IRR said it had little doubt the raid was a covert operation by rogue State security forces. South Africa saw its economic freedom score slip from 62.6 to 61.9 in the latest Index of Economic Freedom report released by the Heritage Foundation in Washington this week. 4 Billion Litres of Toxic Wastewater Entering South Africa’s Dams Daily

Mike Hampton Posted on 10th Nov 2015 by Mike Hampton1st Nov 2020

A looming water disaster that could have been avoided South Africa’s water shortage is not simply the result of the current drought, says water expert Dr Anthony Turton in an analysis published today in @Liberty, the policy bulletin of the IRR (Institute of Race Relations). “The water shortage is also an ‘induced’ one,” says Turton. “It stems from a lack of strategic planning, a loss of skills to ‘transformation’, and the fact that poorly functioning wastewater treatment plants are spewing close on 4 billion litres of untreated or partially treated … Read the full article…
