Ensuring DA power in hands of the few

Helen Zille laughing

The review of the Democratic Alliance by Tony Leon, Ryan Coetzee and Michiel Le Roux changed the party as we know it. Some might see it as the liberals defeating the socialists or whites defeating blacks – I don’t. I consider it about money and power, not ideology. Although Helen Zille is likely the hammer for the organisation’s funders, it could be called her coup d’état. Of course, the attribute for a coup is lack of democracy but I argue that the vote for her was less important than the … Read the full article…

Full report on Democratic Alliance

Democratic Alliance 2019 report review Tony Leon Ryan Coetzee Mmmusi Maimane Helen Zille

The Democratic Alliance may be in crisis but the Public has short memory. And pragmatists may vote for them simply because South Africa needs an opposition party. For all the DA’s chronic and repeated flaws and lies, the awkward fact is that the ANC has more power and is thus responsible for more wrongdoing. The DA will likely decline but how hard or soft will that landing be? DA specific, the most important point is that Helen Zille is in control. Her return (although I don’t believe she was ever … Read the full article…

Tony Leon's Insight into Nelson Mandela

Mike Hampton Posted on 18th May 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

Tony Leon, the former leader of the Democratic Party (now DA) and former South African Ambassador (to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay) under the ANC government from 2009 to 2012, has published his new book, ‘Opposite Mandela: Encounters with South Africa’s Icon’. It offers a different, memorable insight into Nelson Mandela. Journalist, Andrew Donaldson, has published an interview with Tony on Politicsweb. Here are 2 excerpts that are bound to want to make you read the whole interview and buy the book: You write that FW de Klerk made that observation, that … Read the full article…

The Disastrous DA Divide (A Party in Moral Crisis)

Mike Hampton Posted on 24th Nov 2013 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

It’s hard to accept the truth when the lies are what you want to hear. It terrifies me how unaware, apathetic or complicit people are regards the repeated breaches of democracy by the DA. They are a party in moral crisis which is undoubtedly why their ranks have divided. Whereas what’s happening in my home town of Knysna (and elsewhere in the Western Cape) should be an educative warning to South Africa, it’s further diluted by the bashing by blind DA supporters who, like their party, refuse to address the … Read the full article…
