URGENT: Due to the levels of our dams and rivers, the Knysna Municipality has been forced to implement LEVEL 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS with IMMEDIATE EFFECT. This means that potable municipal water is restricted to human consumption and businesses only. No watering of gardens, washing of boats etc. Businesses are being instructed to implement water recycling systems for their businesses. Artificial water features and fountains may only run with recycled water from this moment on. All residents much retrofit their taps, showerheads and other plumbing equipment with water efficient devices. PUNITIVE … Read the full article…

Warning: Knysna’s Gouna River Stops Flowing

Mike Hampton Posted on 21st Dec 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The Knysna Municipality has informed the public that the GOUNA RIVER HAS STOPPED FLOWING. That’s accompanied by the warning to USE WATER WISELY! Knysna’s water supply problem is emphasised by the pipe that burst under the Knysna Estuary 2 days ago. Yesterday, the suburbs of Rykmanshoogte, Eastford Country Estate and parts of Knysna Heights were without water, likely also due to pipes breaking. Some residents have reported brown water coming out of their taps. Today, there’s a water pressure problem on Leisure Isle. The Municipality said on Facebook: “We would … Read the full article…

Water Pipes Burst: Knysna Heights, Hornlee & Eastford

Mike Hampton Posted on 20th Dec 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

It wasn’t long after the good news that the water pipe under the Knysna Estuary had been fixed that more pipes burst elsewhere Knysna Municipality’s failing infrastructure continues to fail. Always toughest during holiday season. The situation is worsened by the water restrictions the town is under. That includes halving the amount of free water allowed per household. Knysna Municipality: “There is currently no water on Crest and Parade street in Hornlee. Our technical services team is currently out investigating the matter and a water truck will be making it’s … Read the full article…

“HIGH Alert” to Enforce Knysna Water Restrictions

Mike Hampton Posted on 25th Feb 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

“Knysna, being a water scarce area, is extremely vulnerable to long periods of no rain since it largely relies on water from its rivers.” That was what was stated in a report to the Knysna Municipality’s Section 80 Governance meeting held February 24. Water security is considered to be when there’s a holding dam containing a minimum of a 6-month water supply. It was stated that a Knysna has never had that capacity, the problem amplified by the recent increase in houses. Currently, there’s only 71 days water storage and … Read the full article…

Knysna’s Poorer Communities Using Double Free Water Allowance

Mike Hampton Posted on 25th Feb 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

A new dimension has been added to Knysna’s water shortage and crumbling infrastructure problem. A large amount of unmetered water has been vanishing into what is traditionally called the northern areas of Knysna. This is home to large, mostly poor communities. At a Section 80 Governance meeting of the Knysna Municipality, the Director of Technical Services, Michael Rhode, stated that no water metering system was ever installed as it was assumed that water usage would be below the 6KL/month free allocation. However, the Planning Directorate has determined that the average … Read the full article…

Brenton Haven Illegally Watering on Scorching Summer Day

Mike Hampton Posted on 5th Jan 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

As i blog this, the real feel temperature in Knysna is, according to two different weather reports, 38C and 44C. Water usage is becoming a contentious issue as South Africa’s water crisis deepens. In my home town of Knysna, a traditionally water scarce area (don’t let the immense forests deceive you), broken water pipes and pumps are happening far too often and there seems to be no sufficient plan to replace aging infrastructure. The Knysna Municipality isn’t communicating the real deal to the public. The problem is scarily amplified when … Read the full article…

Knysna Water Situation Remains Serious Concern

Mike Hampton Posted on 24th Feb 2015 by mikehampton24th Feb 2015

In this press release, the Knysna Municipality urges residents to continuously conserve water! The water situation in the Knysna area remains a serious concern. We are not faced with a crisis yet, however, if water usage is not reduced Knysna could face a serious problem and can be catastrophic. Chairperson of the Planning, Infrastructure and Development Committee, Councillor Louisa Hart said “the current average demand for Knysna is 12.5 megalitres (Ml) daily. We are only able to pump from the Knysna River 9.5 Ml per day leaving us with a … Read the full article…
