Battle: Knysna Municipal Planning Tribunal

Mike Hampton Posted on 4th Jul 2016 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The battle over who would be included on the Knysna Municipal Planning Tribunal (KMPT) deserves more detail than given in my previous blog, ‘Public Victory: Susan Campbell for Tribunal’. THE PUBLIC PUT FIRST BY COINCIDENCE? Politics was afoot when DA Speaker Eleanore Bouw-Spies moved the Knysna Municipal Planning Tribunal item from the back of the agenda to the front. The public can rarely afford the patience (or the time off work) to sit through a full session of a Council meeting. Consequently, it’s become notable that some matters most relevant … Read the full article…

Knysna Budget & Rates Jump 2015/2016

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st Jun 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

“As often happens in politics, you can be heroes and liberators but if you hang around long enough, you can be the villains too…” – Speaker Eleonor Spies, at the start of the Budget Meeting. The Knysna Council meeting of May 29, the one that would decide the budget for 2015/2016, was a mixed bag of positives and uncertainties. Most concerning is that negatives were generally bypassed and positives highlighted whereas all should have been addressed equally. I’m going to end this blog on a positive but the fact is … Read the full article…

Housing Delivery Delay in Knysna

Mike Hampton Posted on 20th Feb 2015 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

In yesterday’s Knysna’s Mayoral Committee meeting, councillors were informed that there would be a delay in the intended delivery of much-needed housing to the Qolweni and Bloemfontein areas. ANC Councillor Wiseman Litoli was upset, saying that there’d been promises and that, “If we’re playing with the emotions of the people, we’re inviting war.” Town Planner, Mike Maughn-Brown, insisted that he had previously said that the Knysna Municipality could not commit to time frames as there are “processes out of control”. In this case, it is the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) … Read the full article…

Knysna ANC Councillors to be Disciplined

Mike Hampton Posted on 2nd Oct 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

“People are frustrated. We cannot deny that our roads will never be like the roads going to The Heads. Money goes elsewhere.” -Councillor Wiseman Litoli (September 25 2014) Back in July this year i reported in ‘Priorities Disagreement Makes Special Development Meeting a Bust’ that a Special Planning, Development and Infrastructure Committee Meeting was called to discuss Knysna’s roads budget, a contentious and difficult issue considering the inadequate finances being received to fix our ailing infrastructure. It was supposed to be a ‘Special’ meeting about roads yet roads had been … Read the full article…

Controversial Creche Closure in Upper Olde Place

Mike Hampton Posted on 1st Oct 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

A Facebook post about the closure of a creche in Upper Olde Place Knysna, on the corner of Boekenhout and Old Toll Road, led to sufficient disagreement in the comment section to prompt this blog and a posting of the contents from the Council Meeting that refused the application from the already running, and allegedly illegal, creche. The FB post simply stated: “A creche in Upper Old Place, on the corner of Boekenhout and Old Toll Road, is to be closed down after objections by Graham McDonald who complained about … Read the full article…

Knysna DA Screws Up Budget #2 – The Adjustments

Mike Hampton Posted on 28th Feb 2014 by mikehampton1st Nov 2020

The Adjustments Budget is the responsibility of Knysna’s Mayor, Georlene Wolmarans. It is the “formal method whereby a municipality may revise it’s annual budget.” On this, the latest Council meeting became a disgrace that let Knysna down. It is highly likely that the DA orchestrated a denial of information to the public and the opposition – to my DA readers, which is most of you, please understand that point! Because the ANC and other opposition politicians were denied does not make the DA correct. You lost out here too (so … Read the full article…
