On June 4, the Knysna-Plett Herald published a Kidge a.k.a. Bill Hartley cartoon questioning the staff of Knysna Municipality’s Planning Department (which is opposite a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet) for using elevators instead of saving electricity and walking up the stairs to the first and second floors of the short building.
Grant Easton the Municipal Manager, sent a scathing letter to the newspaper the following week. It was a clear ‘hands off my Planning Department’ attitude that accused the newspaper of racism for comparing a “black individual to a chicken”. Elaine King, the newspaper’s editor, responded that it was satire, “simply a dig at people who take stairs rather than walk”.
Is there truth or substantiation for the cartoon? And, whether there was truth or not, was there a racist innuendo?
