Your Netflix best foreign movie guide (with trailers)

I love foreign movies! Anyone who skips half the world’s entertainment is a fool! But you’re cleverer than Steve Jobs so you’re bookmarking this 🙂

Just as there’s Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino, so there’s Yimou Zhang, Chan-wook Park, Jee-woon Kim and Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Unfortunately, the industry is male dominated worldwide but for every Nicole Kassell there’s a Susanne Bier. If you need more persuasion, know that ‘Gravity’ and ‘Cloud Atlas’ were written and directed by non-English directors. Obviously, they made foreign language movies before that.

Our minds are amazing – it only takes a couple of movies before we adapt to sub-titles. We’ve evolved to register the emotional inflections of speech so don’t choose English audio that erases emotion – dubbed movies suck!

Since you’re playing catch-up, you can watch the best of the best in a row e.g. research award-winning French or Chinese movies (and watch them in one week).

Netflix may be missing much of my top 100 but they still have excellence you probably unaware of, because you’re non-English phobic or lost in an endless selection that keeps advertising what’s new. Almost as irritating are websites recommending junk (which makes me think they’re sponsored). Consequently, my arrogance is here to help you 🙂
